Barnstaple Town

Barnstaple Town spent 2025–26 chasing something the club had waited forty-six years for. When the Western League Premier Division title arrived that season, it sat alongside just two previous crowns, in 1952–53 and 1979–80, and this time it came with promotion into the Southern League Division One South.

The club started out in 1904 as Pilton Yeo Vale, and within a year, after winning the inaugural North Devon League, took the name Barnstaple Town. The nickname Barum stuck from the Latin form of the town's name, Barnastapolitum, and has outlasted most else from those early years.

Devon Pro Cup wins piled up through the 1950s to the 1980s, thirteen in all, but nothing in the club's history draws a bigger crowd than the FA Cup run of 1954–55, when Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic came to Mill Road for a First Round tie and 6,200 people packed in to watch — still the record at the ground. Two other First Round appearances, in 1951–52 and 1959–60, round out the club's best days in the competition.

Bideford AFC provide the fixture that matters most locally, the North Devon Derby.

Mill Road has been home since the late 1930s. Floodlights went up in 1988, switched on for a friendly against Aston Villa, and the ground now holds 5,000, with 250 seats among them.
