The years before that split were spent in the Tohoku Regional League, where Akita won eleven titles, the first three of them in a row from 1982. That changed in 2006, when the club came through the National Regional League Playoffs and reached the Japan Football League.
The 2017 season is the one that still stings. Akita finished top of J3 and stayed exactly where they were, because the club did not hold a J2 licence. The licence arrived in September 2018. When they won J3 again in 2020, the promotion came with it.
Home is Soyu Stadium in the Yabase Sports Park, holding a little over 20,000, though only 18,560 of those seats are used for J.League fixtures.
The fixture supporters mark first is against Montedio Yamagata — the Oku-hon-sen, the Tohoku derby, two clubs from the same corner of northern Honshu.
