Oita Trinita

The club had been assembled in 1994 as Ōita Trinity, a name it carried for five years before copyright concerns forced a change to Trinita. Few clubs have won the third tier and a cup competition in the same era.

The nicknames tell you something about how the place sees itself. Azzurro comes from the blue, but "Camenaccio" is a joke built on the turtle mascot, kame, folded into an Italian word for meat sauce. It has stuck.

Meetings with Avispa Fukuoka carry the name Kyushu Derby, and there is no love lost in them; Roasso Kumamoto and Sagan Tosu sit close enough to matter too.

Home is Crasas Dome Oita, built for the 2002 World Cup and known across Kyushu as the Big Eye for the shape of its roof, which slides open above the pitch. It held 43,000 when it opened. Three thousand movable seats were later taken off the running track, leaving 40,000 — a figure Oita Trinita, a club from a prefectural capital rather than one of Japan's great cities, has rarely needed in full.
