Blumenthaler SV

The Burgwall-Stadion in Bremen's Blumenthal district holds 5,000 people, though the club's own listings count room for one fewer, 4,999. Nobody at Blumenthaler SV has ever bothered to settle the discrepancy. The ground sits on the northern edge of the city, in the district that gives the club its name and has never given it another home.

Workers in Blumenthal set the club up on 6 June 1919 and signed it into the ATSB, the workers' sports federation that ran outside the mainstream German game. That membership cost the club its name in 1933, when the Nazi authorities dissolved the workers' sports movement; it carried on instead as Allgemeiner Sport-Verein Blumenthal von 1919 and joined the DFB. Not until 1947 did it take back the name Blumenthaler SV.

The nickname Forsthaus-Elf — the Forest House Eleven — was earned in the 1920s, for how hard the side was to beat on its own ground. The colours have stayed blue and red since.

No club has won the Bremen championship as often: eleven titles between 1950 and 1997, and a twelfth in 2025/26. Eight Bremen Cups followed between 1953 and 1978. The furthest the club reached nationally was the Oberliga Nord, then the third tier of German football, from 1974 to 1980 and again in 1997. In 1940 it beat Hamburg 3-1 in the Tschammerpokal, the forerunner of today's DFB-Pokal.

In 1983 the club came close to going under. It survived on money raised by its own supporters, who covered the debts rather than see Blumenthaler SV disappear.
