Aumund-Vegesack

In 1919 the club split over an argument that had nothing to do with results on the pitch: whether to affiliate with the workers' sports federation ATSB or stay inside the mainstream DFB. One group left to found Blumenthaler SV; what remained of Fußballverein Blumenthal merged with Sportverein Vegesack to form Spielvereinigung Aumund-Vegesack.

That lineage goes back to 1892, when the club was founded as Spiel- und Sport Blumenthal, taking the name Fußballverein Blumenthal in 1912. Sportverein Vegesack, its 1919 merger partner, was itself joined in 1929 by SuS Vegesack. The club re-formed after the Second World War in 1946 as SpVgg Aumund-Vegesack, and settled on its current name, Sportgemeinschaft Aumund-Vegesack, in 1953.

SAV, as the club is known, plays in green and white at Stadion Vegesack. It had reached the same final before, losing 1-2 to TSV Wulsdorf in 1954 after extra time, and has reached it since, losing again in 2023 on penalties to Oberneuland after a 1-1 draw.

The fixture that matters most locally needs no cup run to justify it. SAV and Blumenthaler SV, born of that same 1919 dispute, have played 71 editions of the Nordderby, as of 2022.

The names attached to the SAV shirt in recent years — Damir Begić, Denis Nukić, Kaspars Plendiaspis among them — are known in Bremen-Nord, not beyond it.
