Brentwood Town

The Brentwood Centre Arena holds 1,500 people, a scale that fits a club that has spent most of its life shuttling between county leagues rather than knocking on the door of the Football League. It is a leisure-centre ground rather than a traditional stadium, and it says something about the club's identity: modest, local, built around Essex rather than national ambition.

The current side traces back to 1954, when it was formed as Manor Athletic. It became Brentwood Athletic in 1974, then dropped to plain Brentwood the same year. The name Brentwood Town, adopted in 2004, actually belonged to a different club altogether — one formed in 1965 that folded in 1970 after reaching the Third Round of the FA Cup in 1969–70 and winning the Southern League Division One title that same season. Those achievements sit under a name the present club only inherited three decades later.

The 2024–25 season stands as the strongest of the modern era: the Isthmian League North Division title, paired with a run to the Third Round of the FA Trophy. Earlier honours are smaller in scale — two Essex Senior League titles, in 2000–01 and 2006–07, along with a string of county cups. Andy Freeman passed 200 appearances for the club, the kind of figure county football keeps rather than one the record books outside Essex would notice. Mike Flanagan, once a striker at Charlton Athletic, joined the coaching staff in 2020.

Billericay Town supply the recognised Essex derby; Romford, who share the Brentwood Centre Arena as tenants, supply the more local one. What The Blues have not done, in over seventy years under various names, is push past step four of the non-league pyramid.
