«The Wasps»
The Wasps went into the third round of qualifying for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup after beating Macau 4–0 on aggregate in September 2024. That summer had already brought a first: in March 2024 Brunei beat Vanuatu 3–2 in the FIFA Series, their first win over a side from outside the Asian confederation. In June came three wins in a row, among them a 1–0 over Sri Lanka.
The setbacks are just as real. Two months after the Macau tie, Russia won a friendly 11–0. The record defeat is older, a 0–12 loss to the United Arab Emirates in 2001.
Off the pitch, the harder stretch came in September 2009, when FIFA suspended the Brunei Football Association over government interference. The ban ran until May 2011 and kept the national side out of competition throughout. The squad still draws heavily on DPMM FC, a club owned by the Crown Prince of Brunei. DPMM spent years in the Singapore Premier League and went back to the Malaysian Super League in 2025.
Captain Azwan Ali Rahman is the national team's all-time top scorer with 9 goals. Shah Razen Said finished as top scorer at the 2016 AFC Solidarity Cup, where Brunei came fourth.
The biggest prize in the team's history came in 1999, when a Brunei side won the Malaysia Cup, with Said Abdullah in that squad. It is Malaysia that Brunei counts as its main rival, and the Malaysian game has kept pulling Brunei's best players and its trophy hopes across it, from that 1999 win to DPMM's return in 2025.
