Third place at the 1963 Arab Cup remains the closest Lebanon has come to continental silverware, a finish they matched at the Arab Games of 1957 and 1997 and at the 1959 Mediterranean Games. At the WAFF Championship the group stage has been as far as the run goes.

The Lebanese Football Association formed the team on 22 March 1933, when representatives of thirteen clubs met in the Minet El Hosn district of Beirut. FIFA membership followed in 1936, though the first recognised international came only in 1940, a 5-1 defeat to Mandatory Palestine in Jaffa in which Camille Cordahi scored the country's first goal at that level.

Supporters call the side The Cedars, after the tree that stands as the national emblem. Games against Syria carry the weight of a rivalry that goes back to the 1940s.

Hassan Maatouk left the deepest mark on the record books, closing his international career in 2024 with 123 caps and 26 goals, both team highs. On the bench, Miodrag Radulović stands apart: 24 wins from 61 matches, and the man who took Lebanon to consecutive Asian Cup finals tournaments, in 2019 and again in 2023.

Home games are played at the Camille Chamoun Sports City Stadium in Beirut's Bir Hassan district, opened in 1957.
