South Korea have reached the final of the AFC Asian Cup four times since 1972 and won the tournament only twice, in 1956 and 1960, in the competition's opening years before the long run of runner-up finishes that followed.
The team answers to the Korea Football Association, founded on 19 September 1933, which joined FIFA in 1948 and the AFC in 1954. Home matches are played at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, also known as Sangam Stadium, which has held 66,704 supporters since 2001.
No fixture carries the weight of the one against Japan. The two sides have met 82 times, with South Korea ahead 42 wins to 17, a record shaped by more than a century of playing each other under the name Nikkansen, or Hanilchon. A separate, more political rivalry exists with North Korea, though the two meet far less often.
Son Heung-min captains the side and holds the national records for both caps and goals, following a line of players including Park Ji-sung, Hong Myung-bo, Ahn Jung-hwan and Cha Bum-kun. The squad, nicknamed the Taegeuk Warriors, plays in red shirts, black shorts and red socks.
The last Asian Cup final appearance came in 2015, and the wait for a third title continues.
