In 2010, K. Rajagopal ended the wait that mattered most at home: Malaysia won the AFF Championship . The year before, his squad had taken gold at the SEA Games.
Malaysia qualified for the Olympic tournament in Munich in 1972 and again for Moscow in 1980, and took bronze at the 1974 Asian Games in Tehran.
The national side dates from 1963, formed to enter that year's Merdeka Tournament a month before the Federation of Malaysia formally came into being on 16 September. FIFA treats it as the continuation of the Malaya team, which explains membership dates that run earlier than the country: the AFC in 1954, FIFA two years later.
The Asian Cup has been reached four times — 1976, 1980, 2007 and 2023 — and the group stage has never been cleared. Fourteen World Cup qualifying campaigns have produced no finals appearance.
Peter Cklamovski was dismissed in June 2026.
