Football arrived in Vietnam with French colonial administrators towards the end of the 19th century, around 1896, and for most of the century that followed the country sent out two teams rather than one. The South joined FIFA in 1952 and the Asian Football Confederation two years later; the North set up its own association in 1962 and took up membership in both bodies in 1964. When the country was unified in 1975, the associations merged.
Then it went quiet. For more than a decade after unification the national team played no international competition at all. The return came in 1991, at the SEA Games. Membership of the ASEAN Football Federation followed in 1996.
The regional title came first in 2008, then again in 2018 and 2024.
