Bangkok had the tournament to itself in 1972, and Thailand finished third in it — the only time the team has stood on an AFC Asian Cup podium. The World Cup finals have stayed out of reach, the closest approach being the third round of Asian qualifying for 2018.
What the team did instead was take ownership of its own region. Seven AFF Championship titles, more than anyone else, beginning in 1996 and running through 2000, 2002, 2014, 2016, 2020 and 2022.
Kiatisuk Senamuang played in the 1996 side that won the first of them, finished with 71 goals in 134 appearances. Worrawoot Srimaka's hat-trick settled the 2000 final.
The Rajamangala National Stadium holds 65,000 for the home matches, yellow shirts and blue shorts, red when they travel. Matches against Malaysia and Vietnam carry their own history.
Chanathip Songkrasin was named the tournament's best player three times — 2014, 2016 and 2020 — and Teerasil Dangda has scored 25 goals in the competition, more than any other player.
The King's Cup has gone to Thailand 16 times, the first in 1976 and the most recent in 2024.
