Sana'a hosts games at the Al-Thawra Sports City Stadium, a 30,000-seat ground that has watched a national team assembled out of two countries rather than one. The side took shape in 1990, when the football set-ups of the Yemen Arab Republic in the north and the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen in the south merged along with the states themselves, and it joined FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation the following year.

There is no trophy in the cabinet. The closest the side has come was a semi-final finish at the 2010 WAFF Championship, and even that stands out mainly against a record otherwise built from qualifying rounds that end before the tournament proper. Reaching the 2019 AFC Asian Cup counted for more than the results that followed there, since it was the team's first appearance at the finals and came while the country was in the middle of civil war; Group D still finished with defeats to Iran, Iraq and Vietnam, and Yemen went out bottom of the table.

Alaa Al-Sasi has pulled on the shirt more often than anyone else, 84 caps worth, while Ali Al-Nono's 30 goals stand as the most by any Yemeni international. A World Cup finals place has never once come within reach.
