Riyadh, 17 March 1972: the United Arab Emirates play their first official international, beat Qatar 1–0, and the federation running the game back home is barely a year old, founded the same year the country itself came into being.
The 1996 AFC Asian Cup, staged on home soil, took the team all the way to the final against Saudi Arabia at Zayed Sports City Stadium. The match went to penalties, and the UAE came away with silver rather than the trophy. Nineteen years later, at the 2015 tournament in Australia, they went one round further short and settled for bronze.
Regionally the record reads differently. The team won the Arabian Gulf Cup of Nations twice, in 2007 on home ground and again in 2013 in Bahrain. No fixture on the calendar carries more weight than the one against Qatar.
Two names anchor the team's history at opposite ends of a career.
