He was named the Gulf Cup's best goalkeeper five times — in 2003, 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2011.

The team had represented the sultanate since 1978, though the Oman Football Association that now governs it was only formally established in December 2005. Alongside the Gulf Cup, Oman won the West Asian Football Championship twice, in 2002 in Riyadh and in 2009 in Doha. A World Cup place has never followed; one of six finals appearances stretching from 2004 to a seventh now qualified for in 2027.

The UAE has been the fixture that matters most, the two sides meeting at Gulf Cup finals in 2007 and 2017 and settling both by the odd goal or by penalties. Oman has also finished runner-up in the tournament four times, most recently losing to Bahrain in 2024–25.

Behind the goalkeeper stands Ahmed Kano, whose 193 caps remain the national record. He played across four Asian Cups and was named the 2017 Gulf Cup's most valuable player.
