Kuwait's football association came together in 1952, more than a decade before the country had a seat at FIFA or the Asian Football Confederation — both memberships followed in 1964, once the wider region's game had a body to answer to. What grew out of that early start was a national side that spent the 1970s and 1980s as the team the rest of the Gulf had to get past. The Arabian Gulf Cup record still stands: ten titles, stretching from 1970 to 2010, more than any other side in the competition's history. The high point beyond the region came at the 1980 AFC Asian Cup, which Kuwait won outright, having finished runners-up four years earlier. That side reached Spain for the 1982 World Cup, its only appearance at the tournament, and held Czechoslovakia to a draw in the group stage before losing to France and England.

Two names carry the team's scoring history. Bashar Abdullah finished as the all-time top scorer with 75 goals, a tally that includes eight in a single match, a 20-0 win over Bhutan in 2000. Bader Al-Mutawa built a longer career underneath that record, winning 202 caps, more than anyone else to play for Kuwait, and finishing as the top scorer at the 2010 Gulf Cup his side went on to win.

The federation's own history has not run as smoothly as the team's. Government interference in its affairs brought three FIFA suspensions, the first two lifted within months in 2007 and 2008, the third lasting from October 2015 to December 2017 — long enough to cost Kuwait its place in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup and the 2019 Asian Cup. Al-Azraq play in blue for a reason that needs no explanation, out of the Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium, and their fiercest matches still come against Saudi Arabia, a fixture the Gulf Cup has renewed on and off since the 1970s.
