Clevedon Town

Clevedon Town are back in the Southern League Premier Division. It is a position earned after a difficult spell that saw the club demoted from the higher tier in 2015-16 following failures to install the floodlights required for professional fixtures. That financial and logistical setback defined much of the following decade, forcing a reliance on local talent and careful stewardship.

The club traces its roots to 1880, when it formed as Clevedon Football Club, before taking its current name in 1977 after absorbing Ashtonians. They call Hand Stadium home, a modest venue on Davis Lane with a capacity of 3,500. They play in blue at home and yellow away, a colour scheme that has remained constant through their various league shifts.

History here is measured in regional dominance rather than national glory. They lifted the Somerset Senior Cup four times, including a victory in 1977, the same year the club merged with Ashtonians. More recently, they secured the Southern League League Cup in 2011-12 and claimed the Southern League Division One West title in 2005-06. Peter Beadle represents the club’s most famous link to the higher game, playing there for nearly two decades between 1986 and 2005 before returning as a manager. His presence bridged the gap between the local scene and the professional world.

There is also an oddity in their recent past. In 2018, Clevedon paid £3,268 to Manchester City for a FA Youth Cup tie, a transaction that highlighted the financial disparity between the leagues. It was a reminder that while they compete for silverware in Somerset, they operate on a different budget entirely. The club does not pretend otherwise.

Their primary concern remains the rivalry with Weston-super-Mare AFC. Known as the derby day, these matches are the only time the club attracts significant attention beyond the town itself. For the rest of the season, they focus on survival and development, trying to keep one foot in the next round of any cup competition they enter.
