Dietikon

Dietikon sits in the Limmat valley west of Zurich. Hermann Heller founded the side on 1 September 1908 as FC Fortuna; four years later it took the name FC Dietikon and swapped brown and blue for the red and white it still wears, becoming known simply as Die Limmattaler.

The club spent three seasons in the second tier from 1930 to 1933, but its identity was built lower down, in the third to fifth divisions, where it has moved up and down for decades. Promotion in 2023, following a 2. Liga Interregional title, put it back in the 1. Liga Classic. Rather than chase a youth pipeline, Dietikon has made a habit of picking up professionals in the closing stretch of their careers, among them Pa Modou Jagne, who captained the Gambia national team and played in the Swiss Super League for FC Zürich, FC Sion and FC St. Gallen before joining in 2021.

Cup football has given the club its sharpest memories. In 1981 it led Grasshopper Club Zürich 2-1 late on, only to lose 3-2 after a penalty decision still argued over locally. In 1929, a 0-10 defeat to FC Basel still drew praise in the press for the performance of Dietikon player Arthur Hess.

Local rivalry runs through the Mutschellen-Derby against FC Wohlen, named for the pass separating the Limmattal from the Freiamt, while games with SV Höngg are known as the Limmattaler Derby. The club plays in front of crowds a fraction the size of those nights against Grasshopper: the Sportplatz Dornau holds 1,000.
