Dornbirn

A gathering at the Gasthaus zur Flur in March 1913 gave Dornbirn its football club, and the red shorts that followed soon earned it the nickname Rothosen. The town's team went on to reach the Austrian top flight three times, in 1960/61, 1963/64 and 1969/70, brief spells that remain the high point of its history.

For eight years, from 1979 to 1987, Dornbirn did not exist as a separate club at all: it merged with Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz into IG Bregenz/Dornbirn before splitting back into its own identity. The two clubs still meet as rivals, in a fixture known locally as the Städteduell, and the meeting has not always stayed on the pitch — a 5-0 defeat to Bregenz in August 2023 led to bans for members of Dornbirn's coaching staff.

Fahrudin Jusufi, who won bronze with Yugoslavia at the 1962 World Cup, is the name Dornbirn supporters point to when the talk turns to the club's better years. Silverware has mostly stayed local: six Regionalliga West titles and twelve Vorarlberg Cups, the most recent of the cups in 2019, but never the Austrian Cup itself.

Money has been the harder opponent. Liga and sent it back down to the Regionalliga West.
