Dover

Dover sits on the Kentish coast where the ferries and the Channel crossing define the town more than anything else does, and for the football club that has grown up in the River suburb, survival has often mattered more than silverware. Dover Athletic came into being in 1983 after the previous club, Dover F.C., collapsed under debt, and it stepped straight into the vacated place in the Southern League rather than starting from nothing.

The club settled into white shirts and black shorts early on, which gave it the nickname The Whites, and spent much of its life climbing the non-league pyramid one promotion at a time. The Southern League Championship came twice, in 1989–90 and 1992–93, before a longer push through the Isthmian League produced back-to-back titles in 2007–08 and 2008–09. Promotion to the National League followed the Conference South Play-Offs in 2013–14, the club's furthest step up the ladder.

That level has not held. A points deduction sent Dover back down from the National League in 2021–22, and a second relegation followed the year after, dropping them into the National League South. The play-offs returned them there in 2024–25, another climb after another fall, which has become something of a pattern for a club that keeps refusing to stay down for long.

Cup football has given Dover its brighter afternoons rather than the league table: a run to the FA Trophy semi-finals in 1997–98 remains the high point, and the FA Cup Third Round was reached twice, in 2010–11 and again in 2014–15. Games against Ebbsfleet United, Dartford and Maidstone United carry the weight of Kent derbies, the fixtures the away end travels hardest for. Among those who have worn the white shirt, Ben May is the name still spoken about at Crabble.
