What defines the side is not what happens on the pitch but who leaves it. Since 2006, more than sixty players and officials have slipped away from the squad while travelling abroad, seeking asylum rather than returning home — in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Botswana, South Africa. Indefinite national service and political repression are the reasons players themselves have given. The pattern repeated often enough that qualifying campaigns were abandoned mid-course, and the team vanished from FIFA's rankings entirely between September 2023 and March 2026.

Against that backdrop, 2019 stands out. Eritrea reached the final of the CECAFA Cup that year, beating the defending champions Kenya 4–1 in the semi-final before losing 3–0 to Uganda in the final — the best finish in the side's history, better even than the fourth place managed back in 1994. Robel Teklemicheal was named the tournament's most valuable player. Yidnekachew Shimangus holds the record for appearances and shares the top scoring mark with six goals, modest totals that say something about how little continuity the team has ever been allowed to build.

Ethiopia remains the rival that matters most, a fixture weighted by politics as much as football. The team has never reached a World Cup or an Africa Cup of Nations finals, and its history keeps circling back to the same starting point: a federation founded in 1996, still working out what it means to represent a country barely older than itself.
