Gütersloh is a town in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia, and for decades its football identity ran through a club that never made it out of regional football before losing everything.

That inheritance shows in the honours the current club counts as its own: an Oberliga Westfalen title from 1984, a Westfalenliga Group 1 crown in 1991, and the Regionalliga West/Südwest championship of 1996 all predate the refounding by years, yet they sit on FCG's record as continuous history. The club came close to a second collapse in 2017, when an insolvency filing was only narrowly avoided after fresh sponsorship arrived in time.

The 2022/23 season gave Gütersloh something the old club never managed: an Oberliga Westfalen title paired with the Westfalenpokal, and with it a first-ever place in the DFB-Pokal. Among those who wore the shirt before moving on to bigger stages, Karl-Heinz Granitza came through the predecessor side before his career carried him to the NASL and into the West German national team. Daniel Stendel followed a different path, playing for the club before going on to manage Hannover 96 and Hamburger SV.

None of it carries the edge of the derby with SV Lippstadt 08.
