Gala Fairydean Rovers

Netherdale sits on the edge of Galashiels, and the ground is known chiefly for one feature: a covered stand for 750 spectators, designed by the architect Peter Womersley, set inside an overall capacity of 4,000.

The name Gala Fairydean Rovers first turned up in the local press in 1894, attached to a club formed from a merger of Hailes Villa and Gala Renton. By 1907 that single club had split in two — Gala Fairydean and Gala Rovers, the latter starting out as a reserve side. The First World War halted both, and Gala Rovers did not return until 1947, then as an amateur club. The two stayed apart until 21 June 2013, when an annual general meeting brought them back together as one Gala Fairydean Rovers, entering the newly formed Lowland League.

Home colours are red shirts, white shorts and white socks; the away kit is all black.

Bobby Kirk, who had played for Heart of Midlothian, took charge of Gala Fairydean in the 1960s and won the Scottish Qualifying Cup and the East of Scotland League title with the club. Decades later, in 2022, striker Zander Murray came out publicly, becoming the first openly gay player in Scottish professional football since Justin Fashanu.

Matches against Vale of Leithen and Selkirk are known locally as the Border Derby. The most recent trophy came in 2021, the East of Scotland City Cup, and Gala Fairydean Rovers — known to their supporters as the Fairies — continue in the Lowland League the reunited club joined back in 2013.
