«The Citizens»
Meadowbank, out on Edinburgh's eastern edge, began life as an athletics stadium, and Edinburgh City still play in front of a crowd capped at 1,320, only 500 of those seats undercover. It is a small footprint for a capital city, and it is the only ground the current club has ever called home.
The club's unbroken story runs back to 1966, when it was formed as Postal United. It carried that name for two decades before switching, in 1986, to Edinburgh City — taking the identity and colours of an earlier club of the same name, one that had folded in 1955 and has no legal link to the side that adopted its name. For a spell in 2022 and 2023 the club set that identity aside again, playing as FC Edinburgh, before reverting to the name it had worn since the eighties.
Most of the silverware sits in the East of Scotland scene: a Premier Division title in 2005-06, League Cup wins either side of the millennium, the King Cup and the Qualifying Cup among them. The bigger shift came through the Lowland League, which City won in back-to-back seasons in 2014-15 and 2015-16, a run that led to a play-off and, in 2016, the club's first-ever place in the SPFL. A second promotion followed in 2022, up into League One, but the stay lasted only two seasons before relegation sent City back down to League Two.
Spartans are the fixture that matters most, another Edinburgh side built outside the city's traditional football order — a meeting known locally as the Wee Edinburgh Derby.
Liam Henderson, brought through Celtic's academy, wore the Edinburgh City shirt between 2018 and 2021.
