In 1883, the Scottish Cup final was contested entirely by clubs from Dumbartonshire for the first time in the competition's history — Dumbarton against Vale of Leven. Dumbarton won it, the only Scottish Cup they have taken despite reaching the final several times either side of that game.

The club had been formed a decade earlier, on 23 December 1872, one of the oldest football clubs anywhere.

Dumbarton spent 121 years at Boghead Park before moving to The Rock in 2000 — longer at a single ground than any other Scottish club has managed. Their current home holds 2,020.

Known as the Sons, or Sons of the Rock in full, they were champions of Scotland in successive seasons either side of 1891, the first shared with Rangers and the second won outright.

The club folded between 1901 and 1905 and came back as a new entity, carrying its history forward.

Hugh Gallacher scored 205 goals in 231 appearances for Dumbarton, a record that has stood since, while Owen Coyle spent three seasons on the books before making his name as a manager.

Dumbarton have not played in Scotland's top division since 1985, and dropped into the fourth tier for the first time in 1997. In 2024 the club went into administration; the following year Canadian businessman Mario Lapointe bought it, the old company was liquidated, and Dumbarton began the new season with points deducted as a result.
