Scottish League Two occupies the fourth tier of the Scottish football pyramid, situated below the Premiership, Championship, and League One. Administered by the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL), the division currently consists of ten clubs, including Annan Athletic, Clyde, Dumbarton, Edinburgh City, Elgin City, and Forfar Athletic. The season follows a double round-robin format where each team plays every other team twice, once at home and once away.
Promotion and relegation involve a unique pyramid play-off system. The League Two champion is automatically promoted to League One. The teams finishing second, third, and fourth enter a play-off tournament to determine a second promotion spot, which they contest against the ninth-placed team in League One. Conversely, the team finishing tenth is relegated from the SPFL but must enter a two-legged play-off against the winner of a play-off between the champions of the Highland Football League and the Lowland Football League, the fifth tier. The winner of this tie retains or gains SPFL status, while the loser drops to their respective regional league.
The fourth tier was originally established in 1994 as the Scottish Football League Third Division by the Scottish Football League (SFL). It was renamed Scottish League Two in 2013 following the merger of the SFL and the Scottish Premier League to form the SPFL. The most successful club in the history of this tier, combining the Third Division and League Two eras, is Peterhead, with three titles. Other multiple winners include Arbroath, Alloa Athletic, East Fife, Livingston, and Queen's Park, each with two titles. The current reigning champion is Peterhead.
A notable record is held by Blair Henderson, the all-time top scorer in the combined history of the tier with 87 goals. The division is distinct from the Scottish Cup, a knockout tournament, and from the Highland and Lowland leagues, which are regional fifth-tier bodies linked to the SPFL only through the relegation play-off mechanism.
