Forfar Athletic grew out of Angus FC, whose players broke away to run a second string of their own rather than stay understudies at their parent club. The split came in 1885; admitted to the Scottish Football League in 1921, the team known as The Loons — a north-east Scots word for a young lad — has spent almost all of its history in the lower divisions, playing in sky blue and navy.

Station Park has held as many as 10,780 people, the crowd that turned out in 1970 when Rangers came for a Scottish Cup tie. Its listed capacity now is 6,777, with 739 seats. Rangers returned in August 2013, this time for the League Cup, and went home beaten 2-1, both goals scored by Gavin Swankie. Dick Campbell managed the club for seven years from 2008, the longest spell of any Forfar manager in recent memory.

The honours are modest but real: the old Division 'C' in 1948-49, Division Two in 1983-84, Division Three in 1994-95, and promotion play-offs won in 2009-10 and 2016-17. The Forfarshire Cup has returned to Station Park eight times, and the club reached a Scottish Cup semi-final in 1981-82. The heaviest win came earlier still, 14-1 over Lindertis in 1888, three years on from the match that started it all, a 1-0 win over Dundee Our Boys on 16 May 1885.
