Garrel

The miners formed the club on October 21, 1928, as a company side for the Bergwerk Garrel, the local salt mine that once shaped the rhythm of life in this Lower Saxony town. While the name BV now sits quietly on letterheads, it remains a fossil of that industrial age.

Today the club occupies the Sportanlage am Schulzentrum, a modest ground with 1,700 seats. The green and white colours are standard issue, but the pitch itself tells a different story. They earned promotion to the Landesliga Weser-Ems in 2023 after a revival that started with a title in 1997. The climb has not been smooth; they have been runners-up in the league in 2026, proving that the road to the top remains steep.

The handball section, however, operates on a different scale. The women’s team has dominated the regional landscape, lifting the Oberliga Nordsee trophy four times, most recently in 2020. Their success in 2022, winning the 3. Liga Staffel A, separates them from the footballers who are still grinding out results in the fifth tier. It is a dual existence: one side chasing promotion, the other defending a crown. The rivalry with SV Bevern on the football pitch is fierce, but on the court, SFN Vechta holds their focus.

The club survives on the loyalty of a small town that values its history. They do not need large crowds to feel the weight of a Sunday match. The figures on the table change, but the connection to the salt mines and the school next door does not. They play for the badge, knowing that in this part of Germany, survival is measured in seasons, not titles.
