Guarda

Associação Desportiva da Guarda carried the city's name from 1957 until it dissolved in 2001; what followed was a decade of regrouping, first as Guarda Desportiva FC and then as Guarda Futebol Clube, before the present club, Guarda Futebol Clube – Futebol, SAD, was registered on 24 July 2019. In August 2024 it converted into a Sociedade Anónima Desportiva.

The Estádio Municipal da Guarda holds around 4,000, and the side that plays there wears red and white under the nickname Velha Guarda, the Old Guard. Promotion came in 2023/24, when the club topped the Guarda district league and stepped up into the Campeonato de Portugal, the fourth tier. Regionally, the disappointment was cushioned by the Supertaça da Beira Interior, won in 2024 with a 1–0 defeat of Alcains.

Back at district level in 2025/26, Guarda completed a double: the Campeonato Distrital da Guarda and the Taça de Honra da Associação de Futebol da Guarda, the latter settled on penalties against AD Fornos de Algodres, 7–6, after the sides had drawn 1–1. The squad has leaned heavily on internationals from Guinea-Bissau in recent seasons, alongside players from São Tomé and Príncipe. There is no fixed derby, but Sporting Clube da Guarda-Gare and Atlético Clube Egitaniense remain the club's closest rivals within the city.

For now, Guarda's football lives at district level again, with the fourth tier standing as the target it has already reached once and lost.
