Huddersfield

Three championships in a row, 1924, 1925 and 1926, still stand as the first hat-trick of English top-flight titles anyone had managed. Herbert Chapman built that side and had already taken the FA Cup in 1922, beating Preston North End 1-0 on a goal from Billy Smith, who went on to finish as the club's second-highest scorer with 126, behind only George Brown's 159. Charity Shield followed the same year.

None of it would have happened from Leeds. In 1919 chairman John Hilton Croutear, facing a debt of around £25,000, moved to merge Huddersfield Town with the newly formed Leeds United and shift the team to Elland Road. Supporters raised the money to stop him, and the club stayed put, restructured as a public company. It was not the first brush with ruin — bankruptcy had already forced it into liquidation in 1912, when the cost of rebuilding Leeds Road outran the gate receipts, and only a buyout of the assets kept it going.

Titles thinned out after Chapman left, though the club kept finding ways back up: the Second Division in 1970, the Third Division South in 1980, and a run of play-off wins — 1995, 2004, 2012 — that culminated in the 2016-17 Championship play-off final, which put the club back in the Premier League. Bill Shankly served his early managerial years here, from 1956 to 1959, before Liverpool made him famous. Denis Law came through between 1955 and 1960 and left for Manchester United and a Ballon d'Or; Ray Wilson played over 280 games before winning the World Cup with England in 1966.

The blue and white stripes date to 1913, the Terriers nickname to 1969. West Yorkshire settles the rest: Leeds United and Bradford City are the derby fixtures, the oldest and sharpest of them still Leeds. Home is the Accu Stadium, known officially as Kirklees Stadium, built after 86 years at Leeds Road and opened in August 1994, holding 24,121.
