«The Tykes»
A replay settled it. Barnsley had lost the 1910 FA Cup final to Newcastle United, and when they returned two years later Oakwell's tenants had nothing else to show for a quarter-century of trying. In 1912 they reached the final again, drew the first match, and beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 in the replay. It remains the only major trophy the club has ever lifted.
The team that made it there had started life as Barnsley St Peter's, formed by Reverend Tiverton Preedy in 1887 and renamed a decade later. Oakwell became home in 1888 and has stayed that way since; the club swapped its original blue for red and white in 1904, and the colours never changed back. The Football League admitted Barnsley to its Second Division in 1898.
Three Third Division North titles followed in the 1930s and 50s, but the club's more recent identity has been built on getting out of the third tier rather than winning it outright — play-off final wins over Swansea City in 2006 and Millwall in 2016, either side of a Football League Trophy final beaten 3-2 against Oxford United.
Two names from the same era outweigh the rest. Tommy Taylor came through Barnsley's ranks before Manchester United signed him, and died in the Munich air disaster of 1958. Norman Hunter, already a World Cup winner with England, arrived as player and later manager and steered the club through two promotions in the early 1980s. The rivalries that matter most are close to home — Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, Leeds United, Huddersfield Town, Rotherham United, all Yorkshire derbies.
Eric Winstanley captained the side at 19, the youngest in the club's history, and went on to make more than 460 appearances.
