Inter Sibiu

Inter Sibiu spent the 2021–22 season chasing a Sibiu County title in Liga IV, the lowest tier of Romanian football, and won it — a modest line to sit alongside honours the club collected under an entirely different name decades earlier. What is being rebuilt in Sibiu is not a new project but a reclaimed one: the side taking the field now is a legal continuation of a club that was refounded in 2020 as AFC Inter Stars Sibiu, and only in March 2026 secured the right to carry the original crest, the blue-and-black colours and the sporting record that had gone with the old FC Inter Sibiu when it folded in 2000.

That original club began life in 1968 as Independența Sibiu, took the name AS Inter Sibiu in 1985 and became FC Inter Sibiu the year after. Its best spell came at the end of the 1980s: promotion through Liga III in 1985–86, then Liga II two seasons later, and in 1990–91 the Balkans Cup, the club's one continental honour. The football it plays today is a long way down from that level, and a long way too from Stadionul Municipal, the roughly 15,000-capacity ground the old club once filled. Home matches now go to Stadionul Obor, which holds about 2,000.

Sibiu still has a derby to offer: matches against ACS Mediaș are known locally as Derby-ul Inter–Mediaș, one of the few threads running unbroken through the club's broken history. Of the players who wore the shirt before 2000, Dorinel Munteanu is the name Sibiu still measures itself against — a player whose time at the club sits at the top of what Inter Sibiu has produced, long before there was any question of the crest needing to be won back.
