KFUM Oslo

Stian Sortevik pulled on the KFUM Oslo shirt 298 times before hanging it up, enough for the club's own supporters to vote him the best player in its history in a 2019 poll. He belongs to a small group of names, alongside Klaus Odden, who made 365 appearances without ever wearing another club's colours, and Eivind Arnevåg, who scored 187 goals in 245 games — the kind of ledger a small club keeps close.

The club itself grew out of the Young Men's Christian Association, founded on 1 January 1939 at the initiative of John Larsen as the sporting wing of the local YMCA branch. It later moved to Ekebergsletta in the late 1960s, where it has stayed since, playing at the 3,300-capacity KFUM Arena, known to everyone simply as Kåffa, the nickname the whole club carries.

For most of its history, KFUM Oslo's story was written in promotions rather than trophies: a 3. divisjon group and play-off double in 2008, a 2. divisjon group win in 2015, another promotion play-off won in 2018. Each step moved the club up one more rung of Norwegian football's pyramid. The rung that mattered arrived in 2023, when a second-place finish in the 1. divisjon and a play-off win over Skeid sent Kåffa into the Eliteserien for the first time. A year later came the cup run nobody had written into the club's history books before: a semi-final in the NM Cup in 2024, after quarter-finals in 2019 and 2021 had already shown the tie could go their way.

None of it has come at the expense of the local rivalries. Games against Vålerenga are billed as the Oslo derby, and matches with Skeid carry their own weight as a city derby, the fixtures against which Kåffa still measures itself.

It is a long way from a YMCA sports section on Ekebergsletta to a cup semi-final, but that is where the shirt with the number Sortevik and Arnevåg once wore started out.
