About

The Eliteserien is the top-flight professional football league in Norway, organized by the Football Association of Norway (Norges Fotballforbund, NFF). It was founded in 1937, with the inaugural season played in 1937–38. The competition currently features 16 clubs. The season follows a spring-autumn calendar, running from March to November, a format adopted in 1963 to accommodate harsh winter conditions. The format is a double round-robin, where each team plays every other team twice (home and away), totaling 30 matches per team. There are no championship play-offs; the team with the most points is crowned champion. A unique feature is that the final two matchdays are played simultaneously to prevent tactical advantages based on prior results.

Promotion and relegation involve a three-team exchange with the second-tier OBOS-ligaen. The two lowest-placed teams (15th and 16th) in the Eliteserien are directly relegated. The top two teams in the OBOS-ligaen are directly promoted. The 14th-placed Eliteserien team enters a relegation play-off against the winner of a mini-tournament involving the 3rd to 6th placed teams from the OBOS-ligaen. This play-off is a two-legged tie.

Rosenborg BK is the most successful club in the league's history with 26 titles. The current holders are FK Bodø/Glimt, who won the 2024 title, marking their fourth championship. The individual scoring record is held by Odd Iversen, who scored 30 goals in the 1968 season.
