Bodø lies far enough north that Norwegian football drew a line around it for decades: clubs from the northern regions were kept out of the national championship until 1963.

The club itself had started earlier, on 19 September 1916, as Fotballklubben Glimt. A second club by the name Glimt, based in Orkdal, forced a change in 1948 to Ski- og Fotballklubben Bodø-Glimt; skiing dropped out of the name in 1987, and the slash that has sat in Bodø/Glimt ever since had already been creeping into pools coupons through the 1980s before it became official.

Yellow shirts and a round black-and-yellow crest earned the club its oldest nickname, Den Gule Horde — the Yellow Horde.

Tromsø IL remains the fixture that overrides the calendar, the Arctic Circle Derby.

Aspmyra Stadion holds a little over 8,000.
