Bridge Group of Companies built Sabah as a club with no predecessor — a project assembled from nothing by Yagub Huseynov, with Magsud Adigozalov installed as its first president. The club was registered in Baku on 8 September 2017.
Sabah's first season, 2017/18, ran in Azerbaijan's second tier and closed in fifth place — granted on 12 May 2018, to enter the Premier League for 2018/19. The club plays at the Bank Respublika Arena, previously known as Alinja Arena, and takes its colours — black and pink — from a source close to home: the pink is drawn from Masazir Lake, next to the ground. Those colours give Sabah its Azerbaijani nickname, Qara-çəhrayılar, the Black-and-Pinks, though the 2025/26 home kit runs black from collar to sock.
