KRC Genk II

Stadion De Leunen sits in Geel, a fair distance from Genk itself, and that alone says something about the arrangement: KRC Genk II plays where a ground is available, not where its name suggests, and occasionally shifts the fixture back to the Cegeka Arena when the parent club needs the second team closer to home. The Leunenstadion holds 10,524, more than most reserve sides ever need to fill.

The team, known as Jong Genk, only came into being in 2022, entered the Challenger Pro League that same season, and carries the membership number 322 in Belgian football's registry — a number that has belonged to the senior KRC Genk since 1988. That detail marks what this side actually is: an extension of the first team's paperwork rather than a club with its own founding story. Like other reserve sides in the division, it cannot be promoted no matter how well it finishes, only relegated, and last season it finished second from bottom and went down to National Division 1.

Its purpose has shown itself more in names passing through than in results. Bilal El Khannouss wore the shirt in 2022–2023 before moving on to a career watched well beyond Belgium, one of several young players who used Jong Genk as a step rather than a destination. There are no trophies to point to, and matches against fellow farm teams such as Club NXT or RSCA Futures carry no rivalry of their own — whatever tension exists there belongs to Genk and Anderlecht, not to the second-string sides wearing their colours.

So the games go on at De Leunen, in front of a stand built for far bigger crowds than a development fixture draws, in a town the club doesn't share its name with.
