Lancaster City

At the end of West Road sits the Giant Axe, a ground Lancaster City have never left since the club took shape in 1911. The current name only arrived in 1937, when Lancaster itself was made a city by George VI and the club dropped Lancaster Town in step with it.

The blue and white kit gave the place its nickname long before anyone wrote it down for a badge: Dolly Blue, the laundry whitener made in the town, matched the shirts closely enough that supporters started calling the team the Dolly Blues.

Honours have come mostly in Lancashire company — four Lancashire Combination titles either side of the 1930s, and a Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy the club has now won eight times, most recently in 2025–26. The step up came in 1995–96 with the Northern Premier League Division One title, repeated in different form in 2016–17 under Phil Brown, who took the Division One North championship that season. Joe Hayes, who had scored goals for Manchester City, managed the side in the same decade.

Morecambe were the old rivalry, sharp through the 1970s before the two clubs' paths split; these days the fiercer meetings come against Bamber Bridge. Chris Wilcock managed through the 2024–25 season before Jimmy Marshall took over in April 2025.
