Leatherhead

Leatherhead Rose took its name from the trade that kept the town working before anyone thought to put a football team on the fixture list: leather tanning along the Mole. The club that grew out of it in 1907 has carried the trade's name into the ground ever since — Tanners, still, on the team sheet.

What is now Leatherhead Football Club came into being properly in 1946, when Leatherhead Rose merged with Leatherhead United, but the club has always dated itself to the earlier year rather than the merger. Fetcham Grove has been home throughout: a covered main stand, the Bernard Edwards Stand behind one goal, and a wooden stand of the sort clubs at this level tend to build themselves rather than commission. Floodlights went up in the 1960s and were replaced in 2021.

The best of it came in short bursts rather than a settled run. The Athenian League title in 1963–64 followed the Corinthian League championship the year before. The Isthmian League Cup arrived in 2009–10, decades after the club's nearest brush with something bigger: a losing FA Trophy final in 1977–78. Sammy Moore, running the side as player-manager, took them to the FA Cup second round in 2017–18.

The record at Fetcham Grove stands at 5,500, set against Wimbledon in 1976.
