Joel Cornelli, a Brazilian, was appointed in 2025, and his first qualifiers brought five straight wins, against Bhutan, the United Arab Emirates, Palestine and Tajikistan. He took over a side that Soleen Al-Zoubi had spent 2022 to 2025 rebuilding. She then became Technical Director of Women's Football. The National Women's League, set up in 2023 while she was still coach, gave that rebuilding a domestic competition to draw from.

Malaysia's women have been playing internationally since the first year they had an association. The Women's Football Association of Malaysia was formed in March 1975. In August the team played New Zealand in Hong Kong at the inaugural Asian Women's Football Championship and finished fourth.

The other landmark is the 1995 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games final in Bangkok's regional neighbourhood of rivals: Malaysia lost 1–0 to Thailand and took silver. Thailand has been the opponent that matters most ever since, ahead of Singapore and Vietnam. Fourth places at the 2003 and 2013 SEA Games and at the 2007 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women's Championship followed, so the medal from 1995 has not been repeated.

Jaciah Jumilis holds the appearance record with 72 caps. Dadree Rofinus has scored the most goals for the team, 10.

The team, known as Harimau Malaya and dressed in yellow and black, is based at the UiTM Stadium in Shah Alam, Selangor, which holds 10,000. Selayang Stadium and Likas Stadium are used for some fixtures.
