Mattersburg Sv 2020

In August 2020, Commerzialbank Mattersburg collapsed, and with it went SV Mattersburg, the club it had bankrolled for years. What survived was the youth setup, taken over by a newly formed phoenix club, Mattersburg SV 2020, which started again in the lowest regional leagues.

The original club had been founded on 10 June 1922, and by the 2000s had built a reputation well beyond the size of Mattersburg itself, Die Bauern — the Farmers. The peak came in 2006–07, when the club finished third in the Bundesliga and qualified for the UEFA Cup, and reached the Austrian Cup final in successive seasons, losing to SV Pasching and then to FK Austria Wien.

The club's local rivalry with SV Rohrbach bei Mattersburg ran deeper than league standing ever explained: in 1968, Rohrbach supporters set fire to the benches at the Pappelstadion, an incident still cited whenever the derby is mentioned. The Pappelstadion itself, later known as the Michael-Koch-Stadion under a sponsorship deal, held 17,100 before a renovation in 2007 cut capacity to 15,700 for the club's final years.
