Oberwart

Oberwart's football club grew out of a border town that changed countries within a decade of the club taking shape: founded in spring 1912 as SC Oberwart, when the area still belonged to Hungary, it became the oldest football club in Burgenland once the region was ceded to Austria after the First World War. The current club dates from 1974, when SC Oberwart merged with ASK Oberwart to form SV Oberwart, though the centenary celebrated in 2012 counted from the original founding. Fourteen Burgenlandliga titles since 1947 make SV Oberwart the record champion of the state league, a run stretched across six decades from 1947 to 2023 rather than concentrated in one era. Two promotions to the Austrian second tier followed spells of local dominance: the club went up in 1984, dropping straight back down after a single season, then returned in 1992 and stayed until 1996, its longest stint outside Burgenland football. What had eluded the club until this year was a Burgenland Cup: SV Oberwart finally won it in May 2026, beating Mattersburger SV 4–0 in the final. Stadion Oberwart holds 6,000, a figure the club had reason to test in 2025 when Rapid Wien visited and set a new attendance record there. Harry Gamauf, who went on to play for FK Austria Wien and Sturm Graz, remains the name Oberwart supporters point to when the conversation turns to players who left the town and made it at the top level. None of that carries the edge of the fixture against ASV Siegendorf, the closest thing the club has to a definitive rivalry. Games against Siegendorf, together with SC/ESV Parndorf and SC Neusiedl am See 1919, make up what locals call the Burgenland Derby, the few dates each season when the table matters less than the history between them.
