Melville United

The Chatham Cup that hangs in Melville United's history was actually won twice over before the club existed in its present form. Hamilton Technical Old Boys, a forerunner of the side, took it in 1962, and Waikato United, which would later merge into Melville United, added the trophy in 1964 and again in 1988, having also finished runner-up in 1992. All three campaigns are now counted among the club's honours, even though they belonged to clubs that no longer carry their own names.

That merger, in 1996, brought together Melville AFC, founded in 1972, and Waikato United, founded in 1988, into the single club that plays out of Hamilton today. More recently, in 2025, the women's team added a Northern League Championship, giving the current generation a title of its own rather than one inherited from a predecessor.

Gower Park has been Melville United's home since 1981, a modest ground holding 1,000 spectators, and it is there that the club meets Hamilton Wanderers in the Hamilton derby, still the fixture that matters most locally. The club has sent a number of players through to wider stages: Tyler Boyd left for Wellington Phoenix at 17 in 2012, Ryan Thomas spent five years at PEC Zwolle in the Netherlands, and Jamie Searle, signed by Aston Villa in 2019, went on to play for Swansea City, Barnsley and Forest Green Rovers before winning his first New Zealand cap in March 2022 and appearing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In 2019, a cluster of Wellington Phoenix academy graduates arrived at the club together, reinforcing a pipeline that had already sent Adam Thomas to the London 2012 Olympics with New Zealand.
