Mossley

Seel Park has not always been Seel Park in name, and it has not always looked like a football ground at all: before Mossley moved there in 1912, the site had been a rubbish tip and, before that, a cricket field. The main stand went up in stages across the twentieth century, and when storm damage brought it down in 1987, its replacement was named after club president James Anderson. Seel Park now holds 4,500, with 200 seated; the record attendance, 6,640, dates to a 1946 meeting with Stalybridge Celtic, still the club's fiercest local rival.

Mossley itself started life in 1903 as Park Villa, becoming Mossley Juniors the following year and settling on its current name in 1909. The Lilywhites nickname followed in 1912, tied to the switch into white shirts, black shorts.

The club's best spell came at the end of the 1970s: back-to-back Northern Premier League titles in 1978–79 and 1979–80, and a run to the 1979–80 FA Trophy final, lost 2–1 to Dagenham at Wembley. That same period produced Eamonn O'Keefe, sold to Everton for a club-record £25,000 in 1979 after 50 goals in 111 games, though the bigger scoring mark belongs to Dave Moore, whose 234 goals between 1974 and 1983 remain the club's highest tally. Howard Wilkinson served as player-manager around the same years, before going on to manage in the top flight. The Ashton United fixture, played each pre-season for the Willow Wood Hospice Cup. Mossley continue in non-league football.
