Andy Wilkinson came back to Newcastle-under-Lyme in 2023 not to play but to cut a ribbon: the former Stoke City defender opened a new £1.1 million 3G pitch at Roe Lane.

The club did not start there. It began in 1964 as a Sunday League side, and stayed one until financial trouble forced a merger in 1986 with Parkway Clayton, the year Newcastle Town had just won the Mid-Cheshire League Division One title. The merged club kept the old name and moved into Saturday football, which is the version that has carried on since.

Promotion to the North West Counties League followed in 1987, and the club's best domestic run came in 2009–10, when it took the League's Premier Division title and added the Staffordshire Senior Cup, beating Port Vale 6–1 in the final. None of it has translated into a settled place higher up the pyramid: promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One South arrived in 2010, and relegation from it followed in 2016–17.

Local matches carry their own weight. Staying competitive in the North West Counties League is the task in front of Newcastle Town now.
