Petro de Luanda

No fixture in Angolan football carries the weight of the meeting with 1.º de Agosto. When the two sides meet, Angolans call it the Derby de Luanda, or the Clássico dos Clássicos, and Petro de Luanda's record against everyone else in the country only sharpens the point: twenty Girabola titles make it the most decorated club in the league. Fifteen Angolan Cups and ten Super Cups sit alongside that tally.

The club took the field for the first time in January 1980 as Atlético Petróleos de Luanda, tied from birth to the country's oil industry, and it took only two years to collect the first of those league crowns. Supporters and the wider game know it by two nicknames — Os Tricolores, for the blue, yellow and red it wears, and Os Petrolíferos, a nod to where the club came from.

Continental football has been less generous. Petro reached the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League in 2001 and again in 2020-21. That campaign also produced Tiago Azulão's turn as the competition's top scorer. Further back, Zé Kalanga passed through the club before a move to Dinamo București and a place in Angola's 2006 World Cup squad.

Home matches are played in front of up to 48,500 people at the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda, the ground that has watched the club become the name the rest of Angolan football measures itself against.
