Plopeni has spent more of its life fighting to stay itself than fighting anyone else. The club did not survive the next round: it was dissolved in 2004 and returned in 2006 as Intersport Plopeni before settling on its current name, CSO Plopeni, in 2010.
The town gave the club its identity from the start. Its best football came in short, repeated bursts rather than one golden era: Liga III titles arrived across three decades apart, in 1968–69, 1969–70, 1970–71, then again in 1982–83, 1986–87 and twice more in the early 1990s. The nearest it came to the second tier proper was a pair of third-place finishes in Liga II, in 1977–78 and 1978–79, and it went out in the round of 16 of the Cupa României in 1965–66.
Since dropping back into regional and county football, the club has kept winning what is put in front of it, taking the Prahova county league in 2009–10 and 2019–20.
