In the autumn of 2003 the club from a small town on the Váh river held Barcelona to a 1-1 draw in the UEFA Cup, with Mário Breška supplying the assist. It was the same season Breška scored the winning goal in the Slovak Cup final.

The side started out in 1920 as Športový klub Púchov. The nickname Sokol, the Falcon, comes from one of those spells, when the club was known as Sokol Makyta Púchov.

Between 2000 and 2006 Púchov had the best run in its history: promotion through the Slovak Second Division, a runners-up finish in the Slovak First League, and the Cup win.

Home matches are played at a ground holding just over 6,000, though a falling-out with the town once forced the club to play its games in nearby Nosice instead.
