Querétaro

Querétaro lies on Federal Highway 57, the road toward the country's centre that also lent its number to the club's oldest derby. Local football here traces back to a side called Los Piratas, formalised on 8 July 1950 as Club Querétaro A.C. The team plays in blue, black and white and is known as Los Gallos Blancos, the White Roosters.

Its early decades were unsettled. The club was sold and moved to Tampico-Madero in 1980, brought back under the control of the Autonomous University of Querétaro a year later, and in 1987 lost three players in a car crash. It later played as Cobras de Querétaro, merged with another club in 1999, and in 2004 was expelled from the league over unpaid debts and suspected ties to organised crime.

Ownership has turned over repeatedly since: Grupo Imagen bought in in 2014, Grupo Caliente in 2019, and in July 2025 Innovatio Capital, fronted by the American investor Marc Spiegel, paid around $120m for the club — the first Liga MX takeover led by a US owner.

On 5 March 2022, a brawl among supporters during a match against Atlas at Estadio Corregidora, which holds around 34,000, left 26 people injured, an episode still referred to simply as the stadium's tragedy. Atlas remains the derby with least love lost; the other is Atlético de San Luis, faced since 1957 in what both sides call the Clásico de la 57.

Silverware has come only outside the top flight: the Copa MX in 2016, the Supercopa MX that followed, and three Liga de Ascenso titles between 2005 and 2008. Ronaldinho wore the shirt briefly in 2014; Antonio Valencia, once Ecuador's captain, closed his career there in 2020. The Liga MX title itself has eluded Querétaro — the closest they came was the 2015 Clausura final, lost to Santos Laguna 3-5 on aggregate.
