The team started life in 1993 as Teesside Athletic. Twelve years passed without a trophy before the move to the Wearside League in 2005 changed that quickly: the Monkwearmouth Cup arrived in the very first season there, the League Cup the year after.

A first Wearside League title in 2017–18 took them into Northern League Division Two, and the pandemic's cancelled seasons pushed them straight on to Division One. Winning that division in 2024–25 set up the 2025–26 season, when the Northern Premier League Division One East title carried Redcar Athletic to Step 3 for the first time in the club's history. Dale Smith , a local businessman who took control of the club in 2022, has put money into the ground and facilities behind that rise.

Green Lane holds around a thousand people, and the players wear red and white stripes copied from Sunderland.
